Hi there,

We have users who keep bypassing the ban rules, because it is quite easy to do. I don't mind. I just ban them again and update the staff thread and usernote. But is that the right way? How do you do it? You merge their accounts into 1? Or just ban and ban and ban?

What we at The Collective do is ban them. A ban is a ban. Once placed it can never be lifted.

Simple, we ban them, then ban them again, then IP ban them, then contact their Internet Service Provider

I tried the ban ban ban approach once........ and it didn't work for me. If it's just duplicate accounts, I leave them.... why? because they'll just keep signing up again and again using new IPs. I really don't have the time to waste banning people, I've got more important things to do. I let them think they've gone unnoticed but I keep notes of whose got duplicate accounts and I keep a eye on them. Eventually they'll be a handful of accounts they won't be using and I'll just merge them with their main account if they have decided to stick around. If the matter is more serious and I need to ban, I prefer to use the miserable users hack, by the time they've figured out whats happening they get bored and leave.

Merge them all into 1, but update usernote with the actions.

We at KyleTech ban them, post a note about them in all the admincp fora, and it will be put in the next iteration newspaper (The Urinal).

Our Mod Team does a great "detective job" lately. We often have people who spam or behave rude. They almost always try to come back with another account, especially the spam guys who are using the MarktPlace mostly.

Usually our Mods discover the new accounts by checking their expressions and of course their IP Masks/Hosts. However, we had about 3-4 (spam) cases who constantly regged new accounts - about 10+. Against those guys we've taken legal measures - with success.

Whenever someone's banned, even if it's only temp, if they use another account to get around the ban, we 404 ban the new account (vB.org hack, 404 errors when they try to access the board), their name is replaced with "Banned MuP", and we may increase the length of the ban on their main account. We had someone who wouldn't stop creating new ones, so I tachy'd his most recent one. He's been like that for 3 weeks, and hasn't noticed yet. :D

EDIT: I'm going to try miserable users soon.

I would just email them and warn them and delete the new account. If they do it again then I would ban them. Of course if you have more than a few doing this per day, that could be time consuming to deal with, in which case I would probly just ban them as you are doing.

Just continually ban them. It's annoying but there's no real streamlined way to do it without affecting other (sometimes) innocent users.
