I hear so many different things, from word of mouth (yes it is the best but not practical when new site)

Paid advertisement, a good idea, list some good places that are reasonable.

Google Adwords (costly !)

Banner exchanges? I have yet to find any good ones.


Signatures on other sites (useful but not very effective)


Please share some insight, I am sure many others may find links helpful as well.

Apparently a large portion of our members joined because of a single advertising period at somethingawful.com . I was not an admin at the time, however, and so had no involvement with this.

Signatures on other forums are helping my board quite well. At least to get traffic to them.

They also attracts bots. Bots are good, mainly because they advertise your site. :)

Yeah, they add your site in a little higher position in search results

I also joined a couple of topsites. In fact, I am top 50 on/off of PPN Topsites.
